What I experienced in Ethiopia in the last two years is truly ineffable, and I therefore fear that an attempt to decipher my thoughts and emotions and commit them to paper will diminish their value and complexity. This fear notwithstanding, I will do my best.
Last year I travelled for the first time to Ethiopia. I was among the first group of TASIS students to travel to the Auxilium School in Addis Ababa as a part of the Nuovo Fiore Service group. Our objective when working with the children was to advance their level of English, thereby helping them build a better future for themselves, their family, and ultimately their country. In addition we sought to challenge the gender inequality rooted in Ethiopian society by encouraging the local girls to be more vocal and confident. But most importantly we just wanted to have fun and show the children that there are people out there who care.

Every evening we gathered together to determine which classes we were going to teach the next day and then got to work on preparing the lesson plans. Despite all of our planning, we were utterly unprepared to stand in front of a classroom as fifty pairs of expectant eyes looked up at us. We had to learn on the spot and quickly improved as the week progressed. Each class turned out to be an incredibly rewarding, albeit exhausting, experience.
Each morning as I walked down the dirt path that led to the school, I could hear kids playing, laughing or singing, and even from a distance the energy they projected was contagious. My sleepiness rapidly morphed into the energy with which I picked them up and spun them around as they ran into my arms. It was exhilarating to watch them laugh and shriek in joy as I swung them through the air. They hugged me and kissed me and lined up to hold my hand. I was overwhelmed by their affection. The abounding love in their hearts seemed out of place in a country so ravaged by poverty, corruption and social inequality. How can so much love and happiness emerge from such hardship? They had no reason to trust me or accept me, but they did, and I will always wonder what I did to deserve their love.

I could have never anticipated how much more meaningful it would be to return for a second time. The bonds that had formed between the children and I were strengthened, my emotions were heightened, and my passion for serving the community was intensified. At the opening ceremony the children sang and danced and welcomed us. As they brought each of us a beautiful and symbolic flower I had to hold my breath to control my feelings and keep tears from streaming down my face.

That afternoon after classes we went to visit the villages and homes of the students. What was to them an everyday walk to and from school was to us an unforgettable hike. As this was my second time, I did not expect to be as shocked as I was by the overwhelming poverty surrounding me. Revisiting the destitute conditions in which the families live made everything feel more real; it gave the situation a sense of depth, immediacy, and worst of all, permanency. The money that our service group has been raising is intended to help as many families as possible to pay for the exorbitant rents on their mud and stick shacks. What may seem like an insignificant amount of money in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, Switzerland, can have a huge impact on the living conditions of a whole family in one of the poorest countries, Ethiopia.

One of the girls, Khalkida, ran up to me at the beginning of the hike and wrapped her small arms around me. As we walked, we exchanged simple questions and answers. I learned her age, the names of her brothers and sisters, and a multitude of her favourite things. Unlike the love she was willing to share with me, her ability to speak English was limited. Within the first hour she had exhausted her knowledge of English and my more probing questions were met with confused and searching eyes. Nevertheless, we found ways to communicate, and not once during the long trek did we break contact. The bond that formed between us was incredibly profound. The connection went far beyond words, for our conversation had been trivial, and this is what made the experience truly extraordinary.
Dana Wit is another girl whose friendship was very special to me. After classes one day she brought me a simple but heartfelt letter which I have since read many times. That night I wrote a letter in response. I will never forget the look of wonder and bewilderment with which she looked up at me as she took the paper from my hand. The thought that she would get something in return for her kind action had not even crossed her mind. I will forever treasure the letters I received from the children because they represent an invaluable form of love which is unconditional and which is not founded on the expectation of reciprocity.

The personal connections I made this year make it hard to return to my ‘normal’ everyday life. Every time I find myself enjoying a first-world luxury I think of what Khalkida, Dana Wit, or Biniam are doing at that very moment and I am overcome with conflicting emotions: part guilt, part frustration, but most importantly determination to not only continue making a difference, but to double the intensity of my effort.

Within the coming few sentences, I will try to express at least a part of an experience which is absolutely beyond words. Let me first introducing my character by saying that I am a quite reserved person who struggles to show feelings, and I prefer not to share personal matters with everyone. However, in such case, I want to try to make an exception as I believe that the deepest meaning of this experience is in the emotions that I felt which keeps my mind lost in the fog of Milan’s delirious life until today.

Even though I have been in several sites around the African continent for quite some time, my first day in Ethiopia felt like my first day in Africa.

There is no office experience that can be compared to one month of intense practical life in contact with the local people; in such case,  you do not find yourself talking to a person from the other side of a table, but you are sitting in the same hut sharing food, water, essence, smiles, words and sensations.

The warm relationships established allowed me to immerse myself in the Ethiopian culture and essence, which never happened anywhere else. This concludes that this feeling of intimacy is the biggest gift I have got from this Country.

Day after day, a new discovery and a new reflection came.

Experiencing the school practically and physically has been without any doubt gratifying and interesting that is far beyond my expectations.

Approaching children from the other side of the world may seem difficult from the point of view of instructing and communicating ; however,  I am not afraid of sounding banal when I say that since the first day, we were greeted like we are family.

Teaching and playing with those kids has been like having hundreds of little joyous and loving brothers and sisters. There is something in these children that I cannot define. Something that at the first glance breaks down every barrier between me and them, and I think that not even the richest language can count enough words to describe the emotions that I perceived every day for their little gestures, for their eyes that don’t hide joy and disappointments, for their smiles, sincere as anyone else in this world.

After all it would be unfair to reduce to some words such an immense sensation, and for this reason, I suggest to anyone who is reading those few words to live a real physical experience in order to understand what I am trying to explain.

Other than school activity, we had the chance to taste the real Ethiopia in walking with the kids to their villages, eating at their houses, and meeting their families. Visiting villages means experiencing the poverty of people; not with the look of pity of a curious visitor, but with the eyes of someone who is going at a friend’s place and notices that he lives in a different world, and yet, feels close to him. With no electricity, no running water, no sanitation, only the luckiest ones have mud walls, while some others just take cover with a metal sheet or some tatters, and yet they welcomed us as in a castle.

With some amazements, observing these people in their houses abstained me from thinking  even for a moment that with a very paltry expense, they could live in better houses, or maybe just more similar to ours.

My first thought was that maybe they don’t need our houses, or they don’t need to be like us, and probably the ones who are in good health, have a safe and dry place to sleep, something to eat and a good education for their children, do not have such an unsatisfactory life, not even in a mud hut.

In spite of the problems of any nature which affect the Ethiopian society, it is encouraging to see how these people fight with pride, and stand barefooted with the same dignity of a prince.

At this point I was strongly convinced of the fact that quality of life is actually priceless; the ones who do not feel solidarity about themselves do not sleep well even at a Grand Hotel, while some richness in the soul is enough to sleep happily on the ground.

When people ask me what I got from this trip, I never know how to answer. Every single moment I lived is imprinted in my heart and a whole day would not be enough to tell it.

One month in Bole had more value than a year spent dealing with the daily tasks, and I can say I experienced it not as a trip, but as a piece of my life.

I would love to end those few words with a quote of the photographer Chester Higgins which says “We are not Africans because we are born in Africa, we are Africans because Africa is born in us”.

I believe Africa was born in me in early March in Ethiopia.

07:40 AM, after a six hours flight me and the other volunteers landed in the airport of Addis Abeba. Sister Pina, one of the responsible of the school, was already outside waiting for us. Baggage loaded we left towards the school. Unaware of what was expecting us we were immediately captivated by faces, colours, and the funny calm pace of the horses and donkey walking on the main road of the city; our adventure had started. A big gate was hiding a wonderful surprise, everybody in the school was waiting for us. When we entered the school courtyard, still sitting in the car, six hundred smiling children welcomed us singing with an indescribable joy. The colours of the roses they gave us as gifts, of the balloons decorating the entrance of the school, and those of the drawings they made for us, all were waving on the rhythm of their sweet voices. Holding tears has been really hard, so as the desire to kiss and hug them one by one. The teachers were coordinating the welcome parade and they have been all really nice. After just one hour in the school we were completely overwhelmed by happiness, joy and tenderness. The emotions that these children and their families can transmit are so intense that can bring everyone to decide to remain forever. Already aware that this experience would have been incredible, we had a tour of the school lead by Riccardo. During this first visit we met the true souls of the school, the Sisters.

 In the afternoon, after a pause we left the boss working and we did a tour in the city center of Addis Ababa. This occasion made clear that driving here is something impossible without experience. Goats, horses, donkey or people cross the street when they have to without caring about cars and lorries; moreover none is in a hurry. Everybody drives in the middle of the street and if the car breaks down it is repaired right where it stops. Overloaded carts towed by horses or donkeys conquer the road dribbling between cars and the horn is the passepartout to go anywhere. The conclusion has been the following: the time when you leave is sure, but it is hazardous the precisely define when you will arrive. Luckily in the school there is Alemu, the best and most patient driver ever. Once again, while moving along the streets we have been captured by the surrounding scenario. The intense colours of the thousand chaotic shops, the fruits well stacked and polished sold in the stands along the streets, the scarfs of the women waving in the wind and the smiling people that have noticed our presence all created an incredible picture. We didn’t know where to look to not miss anything.

 Honestly I had never been in Africa before and I had no idea about the reaction of people towards ‘farengi’, the local word used to indicate the foreigners usually white. I was expecting some closure and an unbridgeable distance, yet from the first day I had to change my mind. All the children always smile at you and everybody observe you. The trend is just this, observe, quite different from simple watching or fixing which can be annoying. Nobody is inappropriate or insolent and although the passage of two foreign girls caused inevitable comments they were sort of funny. The English exclamations and idioms they used made them seem like straight out of some Hollywood films. Though completely different compared to the society I come from, soon you get used to receive greetings by everyone and get marriage proposals by the way; it always made me smile.

 Each time you return from a trip the energies are grounded and a fitting conclusion of these days filled with news is really a good nap. I must confess that when I was told that the days started at 6:00 AM to finish at the same time, I was afraid of not being able to sleep and get bored after dinner. No fear! At 20:00 PM I already began to yawn and at 21:00 PM the bed was the only thing I wanted. The alarm clock was pleasantly accompanied by the first gleam of sunshine and breakfast together at 07:00 AM, it was just a perfect charge for the day to deal with! In the following days we have been given the opportunity to experience the many different realities that make up this city. We visited other schools in Addis Ababa, as we were on missions further afield in the surrounding rural area. I must say that the Sisters have done everything so that the experience was complete for us until the last day. The relationship with them was very special, day after day confidence increased up to feel like family. Shortly after, the school was already recognized as our “home” and cross the gate was like stepping into a small green and happy island, far from the traffic of the dusty roads. The school compound is really a familiar place for everyone where for each problem is searched a solution and the right help is provided. It is a heartening place after the several experiences and stories harder to digest. The smiles of our children, I dare to make them mine again for some time, are beneficial and would make anyone feel better.

 Confronting what is outside the school, watching these kids run and play, an almost automatic instinct pushes you to do more for them. You inevitably desire that they may live a better future, as they should not be unwitting victims, but simply children. Often I found myself wondering what I could have done immediately to change what I saw in that moment. Of course put the hands in the pockets and give some few money would have been the easiest thing to do. Then reflecting on what the Sisters do daily it can be understood that providing a progressive help to those families, those mothers and children, is definitely more powerful than of giving an external “one time help”. The strength to go towards an improvement and to escape the most humble conditions must arise from their own efforts, by their own desire to reach it. With this attitude education can be seen as a means and not just an end. Indeed, in this experience, I rediscovered something that fortunately in my life was always assumed: the possibility to be educated. Education, and not just the scholastic one, common sense and civility, are an essential element for the growth of a child who will be a future citizen and parent. The school, the discipline, the order and the act of taking care of yourself, your belongings and the others here can be powerful weapons to change the social situation. The teachers under the watchful eye of the Sisters patiently teach all this aspects and values.

 The end of the lessons was the highlight of the day: it was the time to go to visit the families of the children. We wandered with the students around the streets of the village taking them home where mothers without hesitation opened their doors to us, offering a seat (when there was) and something to eat. Every time we went out, among the students there was one taking the role of improvised guide leading the group to other students’ houses who surprised to see us run towards us. Obviously in a jiffy all their friends from other houses arrived and we were, as at school, surrounded by a large group of smiling children who, interrupted the football match between the shelters, came to shake hands. Mothers or sisters protruded from the gates of metal fences or waiting at the door to control what was going on usually went back after few moments to grind tef or roasting coffee. People reactions were different, someone approached curious, other were too shy to speak or too busy to care about us, but in any case the visits to the village was always a particular event that students never failed to mention the next day at school.

 In the morning children arrived with their uniform, inevitably dusted, running with the schoolbags dangling from their shoulders, the snack in the hand and a thousand teeth smile. Already saying hello from afar they call you asking to play with them. After breakfast the first arrived were already there happy to see you and ready to give you an infinite number of hugs and kisses. These feelings were incredible and hard to forget. The habit of being surrounded by people who loves only after a week and gives you everything without asking anything in return is a unique one. Many, on my return at home, asked me what they might have needed over there that I could have been able to give. To this question my answer was always the same: nothing of what a person can do or give is unnecessary, a smile or a hug for acquire an infinite power for those who almost does not receive them. Sometimes they just want to stay with you and walk in the courtyard, to sit close and chat during the break or even just hold your hand. Children do not speak English, but is it really true that the language of love is universal. I must confess that the last two weeks have been wonderful. The first few days children just smile and only someone dares to speak, but after a while they go wild! As soon as they open to you they turn into pure energy and love and even now while writing I keep smiling. The breaks are a dose of life, positive craziness and enthusiasm.

 In conclusion, I can only be grateful for such an experience and as they say the opportunities arriving by chance are always the best ones. Without being conceited, I dare to say that now I have a new bit in my “luggage of life” that brings me to evaluate what surrounds me here more carefully and lets me appreciate things that were taken for granted since birth. The only “flaw” is that the desire to do more for them does not want peace and I will never let them only where I crossed them for a month. Although they are physically far away, they are not in my head and in my heart.

As soon as we came back to Italy, we were overwhelmed by a thousands questions about our experience.

It is difficult to answer for fear of trivializing a month full of emotions, smiles, hugs and tears.

We can say we found love in the broadest sense of the term! From the very beginning, we felt welcomed both by the nuns of the mission and the local people: we will never forget the first day when we saw the kids greeting and running towards us and a mother that – with a simple gaze – showed she was happy to meet us.

Before leaving, we were warned that this experience would have been a great personal enrichment more than a concrete help for the local community: this has been definitely true!

We have enjoyed the beauty to feel welcomed and to share even when you have nothing more than a cup of coffee to offer, the simplicity of the children – who are still able to have fun without a mobile phone and videogames – and the commitment of the nuns and the other volunteers to improve the life conditions of many families.

This experience has positively changed us: we have understood what really matters in life and we hope that a lot of other young volunteers will follow our path.

My name is Benedetto Santoboni and I am from Rome. I have lived most of my life in Lugano, Switzerland, so I am accustomed to certain traditions. Since I am from and lived in first world countries, it has been challenging writing down on a piece of paper my experience in a developing country, Ethiopia. At first glance, that world was completely different in so many ways that it was hard to keep it up with it. The first few days I had to get used of where I was, and where I would have been staying for the next couple of weeks. I thought my staying would have been extremely hard to face, but exactly on the fourth day, I had already made hundreds of love, caring, delightful, and happy friends who have treated me like their “big brother.”

Everyday I felt blessed, because I was fortunate enough to live in a healthy country while the people in Ethiopia were struggling to survive, they had little food and water, their houses had capabilities of hosting two people while their whole family was made up of five members, and the streets were impossible to walk on; this made me appreciate everything given to me a lot more. Shockingly, all of these people were as happy as I was almost as if they did not have any problems at all. Each and everyday, I would see children smile, play with one another, treat me and my friends like family, and give us thousands of gifts. In a few words, they enjoyed their time to the fullest.

The school where I stayed, Nuovo Fiore, is a beautiful campus made up of the main building where the sisters live, two buildings for school, a soccer field, a volleyball court and a spectacular playground for the kindergarten. The place is breathtaking.

The day I have arrived I felt overwhelmed with new things to see, understand, and learn from. I thought I would have not enjoyed my time there because of their situation that would have made me sorrowful. After two weeks, the day I had to return to Europe, I would have loved to stay more. I did not want to leave these children who have welcomed me with open hearts. I knew I’d miss them like crazy.

A page is not enough to describe my feelings for this incredible and fascinating experience in Ethiopia! I hope to go there again sometimes in the future and meet the children again!

Mal d’Africa

I think it’s really hard to tell such experiences, I do not seem to be able to fully translate the feelings I have experienced; even when people ask me to tell, I never know where to start, because all I’ve been through for 3 months was important. When I returned home I felt strange, as if I were in a different place than left by leaving. It also seemed strange to be in the car and not have to dodge cows, sheep, goats and even people.

But the hardest thing was to realize that I would not see all the kids every day, I would not hear them singing in the morning and I would not receive the thousand hugs and kisses every day.

Children, like the locals, are great; although they have virtually nothing they are always happy and ready to give you everything. Several times I happened to offer me their breakfast or lunch, maybe having only one to eat all day long. They are children who do not need expensive or technological games, just a sheet of paper and a pencil for them to be happy. In the breaks they spend most of the time playing and the last 10 minutes they eat breakfast or lunch. They love playing so much that they do it at all times, with the sun or the rain.

Teaching their computers and taking care of the library for 3 months was beautiful; children in computer lessons have always shown great interest; obviously most of them do not have a computer at home, so computer lessons were good to everyone and in fact they never disturbed. I was trying to spend as much time with the children, even at lunchtime I ate fast so I could go back with them playing; after school I was still with them all for a while and then I went to school with two girls with serious family and school problems. We also did a lesson on Saturday morning, when even the children of girls working at school reached us and then, once everyone had studied, I saw the cartoons. I would like to thank the foundation for everything she does and to make life better for those children and their families. A special thanks goes to the sisters who have hosted me for 3 months, welcoming me with open arms.

I would like to conclude by saying that it was the most beautiful experience of my life and I did it again 1000 times, it made me understand what are the really important things in life and sometimes we tend to complain about smallness.

I would like to add that I finally understood what is meant by the bad of Africa, because when it comes time to go home it is inevitable to leave a piece of his heart there.

For work and passion he has approached philanthropy and thanks to the Foundation New Flower in Africa he perceives the values ​​and benefits.

Born on April 1, 1967 in Sorengo, Switzerland, graduated in Business Administration.

Married to Riccardo Braglia, has two children: Gabriele and Giacomo.

It has been active since 2003 in fashion, first with shares in stores and then with a line of knitwear. He has been active in WS Fashion SA of Lugano for 10 years and since 2015 is General Manager. Currently operates three fashion and furnishing stores in Lugano.

Experience of associations and non-profit organizations in the role of volunteer and member of the committee

Salesian nun that has worked 29 years as missionary in Ethiopia. Thanks to his knowledge of the country and her experience in the educational environment, has been invited to take place in the Board of Foundation New Flower in Africa.

New Flower In Africa supports projects that aim to develop the potential and the personalities of individuals of all ages and gender. For this reason we fund trainings and technical schools (Technical, Vocational Education and Training-TVET) to better prepare young men and women to employment trying to overcome the gender distinctions. In countries with a high migration rate due to lack of perspectives and opportunities for those who cannot afford such trainings, this type of projects represents a real alternative. Particular attention is always paid to young girls and women, often single mothers, who in many cases are alone or dependent on wrong people without any capacity to have a proper gain.

Nfa finanzia progetti educativi che prevedono accanto all’insegnamento di competenze scolastiche formali la diffusione di buona prassi e regole basilari nell’ambito della salute e dell’igiene.

I bambini nati da mamme con un livello di educazione più elevato (compreso il completamento delle scuola primaria) e con basilari conoscenze sull’igiene e la salute  hanno più probabilità di non contrarre malattie e in generale di sopravvivere.

Quello che ho vissuto in Etiopia negli ultimi due anni è veramente ineffabile, e temo pertanto che un tentativo di decifrare i miei pensieri ed emozioni sulla carta diminuirà il loro valore e complessità. Nonostante questa paura, cercherò di farlo al mio meglio.

L’anno scorso ho fatto per la prima volta un viaggio in Etiopia. Sono stata tra gli studenti parte del primo gruppo TASIS che si è recato alla scuola Auxilium ad Addis Abeba per dare il suo servizio a Nuovo Fiore. Il nostro obiettivo durante il lavoro con i bambini è stato aiutarli a migliorare il loro livello d’inglese, permettendo loro di costruire un futuro migliore per se stessi, i loro familiari e in ultima analisi, il loro paese. Inoltre, abbiamo cercato di sfidare la disuguaglianza di genere radicata nella società etiope, incoraggiando le ragazze locali ad avere più voce e maggiore fiducia in se stesse. Accanto a questo primo scopo, volevamo soprattutto divertirci con loro e mostrare ai bambini che ci sono persone là fuori che si prendono cura di loro.

Ogni sera ci siamo riuniti per stabilire in quali classi avremmo insegnato il giorno successivo e abbiamo avuto modo di lavorare sulla preparazione delle lezioni. Ciononostante, spesso eravamo assolutamente impreparati a stare in un’aula davanti a cinquanta paia di occhi che ci guardavano con grande aspettativa. Abbiamo dovuto imparare sul posto e migliorare rapidamente col passare dei giorni. Ogni classe si è rivelata essere un’esperienza incredibilmente gratificante, anche se faticosa.

Ogni mattina camminavo lungo il sentiero sterrato che portava alla scuola, già si potevano sentire i bambini giocare, ridere o cantare e anche a distanza l’energia che proiettavano era contagiosa. La mia sonnolenza si trasformava rapidamente in energia con cui sollevavo i bambini facendoli saltare mentre correvano fra le mie braccia. E’ stato meraviglioso vederli ridere e gridare di gioia quando li facevo roteare in aria. Mi abbracciavano e baciavano e stavano allineati in fila per darmi la mano. Sono rimasta colpita dal loro affetto. L’abbondante amore nei loro cuori sembrava fuori luogo in un Paese così devastato da povertà, corruzione e diseguaglianza sociale. Come può essere che così tanto amore e felicità emergano da tale disagio? Non avevano ragione di fidarsi di me o di accettarmi, ma lo hanno fatto e io mi chiedo sempre cosa ho fatto per meritare il loro amore.

Non mi sarei mai immaginata quanto potesse essere significativo tornare per una seconda volta. I legami che si erano formati tra me e i bambini si erano rafforzati, le mie emozioni si sono accentuate e la mia passione per servire la Comunità è stata intensificata. Alla cerimonia di apertura i bambini ci hanno accolto cantando e ballando. A ognuno di noi hanno portato un fiore bello e simbolico e ho dovuto trattenere il respiro per controllare i miei sentimenti ed evitare che le lacrime mi scendessero lungo il viso.

Dopo le lezioni nel pomeriggio siamo andati a visitare i villaggi e le case degli studenti. Quella che per loro era una passeggiata quotidiana per raggiungere la scuola è stata per noi un’escursione indimenticabile. Essendo questa la mia seconda volta, non mi aspettavo di essere così scioccata dalla povertà opprimente che mi circondava. Rivedere le condizioni di indigenza in cui vivono le famiglie ha fatto sentire tutto ciò più reale; ha dato un senso di profondità alla situazione, immediatezza e peggiore di tutti, permanenza. Il denaro che ha raccolto il nostro gruppo di servizio è stato indirizzato alle famiglie per aiutarle perché per molti non è neanche possibile pagare gli affitti esorbitanti per le baracche di fango e legno in cui vivono. Ciò che può sembrare una quantità insignificante di denaro in uno dei Paesi più ricchi del mondo, la Svizzera, può avere un enorme impatto sulle condizioni di vita di un’intera famiglia in uno dei Paesi più poveri, l’Etiopia.

Una delle ragazze, Khalkida, corse verso di me all’inizio dell’escursione e avvolse le piccole braccia intorno a me. Quando stavamo camminando, ci siamo scambiati semplici domande e risposte. Ho imparato la sua età, i nomi dei suoi fratelli e sorelle e una moltitudine delle sue cose preferite. A differenza dell’amore che lei era disposta a condividere con me, la sua abilità di parlare inglese era limitata. Entro la prima ora lei aveva già esaurito la sua conoscenza della lingua inglese e alle mie domande più specifiche la reazione sono stati occhi confusi alla ricerca di un modo per rispondere. Tuttavia, abbiamo trovato il modo di comunicare e non una volta durante il lungo trekking abbiamo perso il legame che si era instaurato. Il rapporto che si è formato tra noi era incredibilmente profondo, andando ben oltre le parole. La nostra conversazione era stata semplice e limitata, ma è stato proprio questo contatto che ha reso l’esperienza davvero straordinaria.

Dana Wit è un’altra ragazza la cui amicizia è stata molto speciale per me. Dopo una sola lezione mi ha portato una lettera semplice ma sincera che da allora ho riletto molte volte. Quella notte le ho scritto una lettera di risposta. Non dimenticherò mai lo sguardo di stupore e di sconcerto con cui lei mi guardò quando prese la lettera dalle mie mani. Il pensiero che lei potesse ricevere qualcosa in cambio per la sua azione gentile non le aveva ancora attraversato la mente. Farò tesoro per sempre di tutte le lettere che ho ricevuto dai bambini poiché rappresentano una preziosa forma di amore incondizionato e non basato sull’aspettativa di reciprocità.

Le conoscenze che ho fatto quest’anno rendono difficile tornare alla mia ‘normale’ vita quotidiana. Ogni volta che mi trovo ad avere un lusso di questo ‘primo mondo’ penso a ciò che Khalkida, Dana Wit o Biniam stanno facendo in quel momento e sono sopraffatta da emozioni contrastanti: in parte colpa, in parte frustrazione, ma soprattutto determinazione non solo a continuare a cercare di fare la differenza, ma soprattutto di raddoppiare l’intensità del mio sforzo.

Ho vissuto la maggior parte della mia vita a Lugano, Svizzera, quindi sono abituato a certe tradizioni.

Dato che provengo e ho vissuto in paesi del primo mondo, è stato impegnativo scrivere su un pezzo di carta la mia esperienza in un paese in via di sviluppo: l’Etiopia. A prima vista, quel mondo era completamente diverso in così tanti modi che era difficile tenere il passo con esso. I primi giorni ho dovuto abituarmi a dove fossi, e dove avrei alloggiato per il prossimo

paio di settimane.

Ho pensato che il mio soggiorno sarebbe stato estremamente difficile da affrontare, ma esattamente il quarto giorno, avevo già fatto centinaia di amicizie, amici felici che mi hanno trattato come il loro “fratello maggiore’’.

Ogni giorno mi sentivo “benedetto”, perché ho avuto la fortuna di vivere in un paese sano, mentre le persone in Etiopia stavano lottando per sopravvivere, avevano poco cibo e acqua, le loro case avevano capacità di ospitare due persone, mentre tutta la famiglia era composta da cinque membri, e sulle strade era impossibile camminare; questo mi ha fatto apprezzare tutto quello che ho ricevuto dalla vita fino ad ora.

Incredibilmente, tutte queste persone erano felici come se quasi non avessero problemi. Era un piacere vedere i bambini sorridere, giocare tra loro, trattare me, e i miei amici come una famiglia. Da loro abbiamo ricevuto tanti piccoli doni: disegnini, piccole poesie, il nostro nome scritto in amarico ecc…

La scuola dove ho soggiornato, “Nuovo Fiore”, è un bellissimo campus composto dall’abitazione, dove le suore FMA vivono, due edifici per la scuola, un campo da calcio, un campo da pallavolo e un parco giochi spettacolare per l’asilo. Il posto è mozzafiato. Il giorno in cui sono arrivato mi sono sentito sopraffatto con nuove cose da vedere, capire e imparare. Pensavo che non avrei apprezzato il mio tempo a causa della loro situazione che mi avrebbe fatto sentir male. Dopo due settimane, sono dovuto tornare in Europa, mi sarebbe piaciuto rimanere più. Non volevo lasciare quei bambini che mi hanno accolto con il cuore aperto. Sapevo che avrei sentito moltissimo la loro mancanza.

Una pagina non è sufficiente per descrivere i miei sentimenti per questo incredibile e affascinante esperienza in Etiopia! Spero di tornarci ancora almeno una volta in futuro.

Appena rientrate in Italia, siamo state sommerse da mille domande e ogni volta è difficile rispondere perché abbiamo l’impressione di banalizzare con poche frasi un mese intenso, ricco di emozioni, sorrisi, abbracci e lacrime.

Possiamo dire di aver trovato l’amore nel senso più ampio e bello del termine!

Fin da subito ci siamo sentite accolte sia dalle suore della missione sia dalla gente del posto: ricorderemo per sempre il primo giorno quando abbiamo visto i bambini sorriderci, salutarci e correrci incontro, pur non conoscendoci, e una delle mamme con un semplice sguardo e un abbraccio ci ha fatto intendere che era contenta di vederci.

Prima di partire eravamo state avvertite che quest’esperienza sarebbe stata un arricchimento per noi più che un vero e proprio aiuto per le persone del luogo: una volta arrivate a destinazione ne abbiamo avuto la conferma.

Abbiamo potuto assaporare la bellezza dell’accoglienza e della condivisione anche quando si ha davvero poco da offrire, la semplicità con cui i bambini sono in grado di divertirsi senza avere computer, telefonini o videogames, e la dedizione delle suore e dei volontari a cercare di migliorare le condizioni di vita di molte famiglie.

Quest’esperienza ci ha sicuramente cambiate, aiutandoci a capire ciò che conta davvero e auguriamo di vivere lo stesso a molti altri giovani.

Alle 7:40, ore locali, dopo sei ore di volo siamo atterrati all’aeroporto di Addis Ababa dove Sister Pina già ci aspettava. Caricati i bagagli, siamo partiti alla volta della scuola. Inconsapevoli di quello che ci aspettava e già rapiti dai volti della gente, dai colori, dai cavalli e dagli asini che pascolavano tranquillamente lungo la strada principale della città, abbiamo dato inizio alla nostra avventura. Un grande cancello celava una fantastica sorpresa; tutti ci stavano aspettando e non appena siamo entrati in cortile, ancora seduti in macchina, seicentocinquanta bambini sorridenti ci hanno accolto cantando con una gioia indescrivibile. I colori delle rose che ci hanno regalato, dei palloncini che decoravano l’ingresso e dei disegni fatti per noi che sventolavano a ritmo delle loro dolcissime vocine, mi fanno ancora venire gli occhi lucidi. Dopo aver trattenuto a fatica le lacrime, per evitare almeno il primo giorno questa figura, ancora più difficile è stato frenare la tentazione di baciarli e abbracciali uno per uno. Le maestre che coordinavano il tutto sono state meravigliose. Dopo un’ora di permanenza nella scuola un flusso incontenibile di felicità, allegria e tenerezza ci ha completamente conquistati. Le emozioni che riescono a trasmettere sono così intense che porterebbero chiunque a prendere la decisione di rimanere per sempre. Un’enorme gratitudine e riconoscenza verso quanto fatto in questi anni da Riccardo è stata dimostrata con un piccolo spettacolo e una miriade di disegni e lettere realizzate dalle classi e dai singoli bambini: delle vere dichiarazioni di fede e amore. Già convinta che questa sarebbe stata un’esperienza incredibile, Riccardo ci ha portati in esplorazione della struttura della scuola e abbiamo fatto la conoscenza delle vere anime dell’istituto, le Sisters. Nel pomeriggio, dopo un’opportuna siesta per ritornare in forze, abbiamo lasciato il boss al lavoro e siamo stati portati nel centro di Addis Ababa per un rapido giro turistico. Proprio in questi primi momenti per la strada, abbiamo capito che non potremmo mai guidare qui se non dopo anni di pratica. Ora vi spiego il perché. Che siano capre, cani, asini, cavalli o umani tutti attraversano quando ne hanno l’intenzione, non curandosi minimamente della macchina o del camion in arrivo. Nessuno ha mai fretta. Si guida in mezzo alla strada e si ripara la macchina dove si ferma, i carretti stracarichi trainati da cavalli o asini conquistano la strada e il clacson è il passe partout per arrivare ovunque… La conclusione a cui siamo arrivati è stata la seguente: qui si sa l’ora in cui si parte, ma è davvero azzardato stabilire quella di ritorno; mai dire con precisione quando arriverai. Per tale ragione i ringraziamenti ad Alemu, autista, guida turistica e tutto fare, sono infiniti. Ancora una volta i colori dei mille negozietti, della frutta venduta lungo la strada ben impilata e lucidata, delle sciarpe che avvolgono le donne e i sorrisi che ci venivano rivolti ci hanno rapito. Letteralmente non sapevamo più dove guardare per non perderci nulla. A essere onesti non essendo mai stata in Africa non avevo la minima idea di quella che potesse essere la reazione delle persone del luogo al “farengi”, termine locale per indicare lo straniero bianco, ovviamente più ricco e talvolta prepotente. Mi aspettavo una certa chiusura e un’incolmabile distanza, eppure dal primo giorno mi sono dovuta ricredere. Non c’è bambino che non ti sorrida o persona che non che ti osservi. La tendenza è proprio questa, osservarti, ben diverso dal semplice guardare o fissare che può essere anche fastidioso. Nessuno è inopportuno o insolente e sebbene il passaggio di due ragazze bianche causasse inevitabili commenti, avevano un nonsoche di buffo poiché l’inglese con cui erano esclamati li faceva sembrare come usciti da qualche film di Hollywood. Presto ci si fa l’abitudine ad essere salutati da tutti e ricevere proposte di matrimonio per la strada fa sempre sorridere. Ogni volta che si torna da un giro le energie sono a terra e la degna conclusione di queste giornate impregnate di novità è davvero una bella dormita. Devo confessare che quando mi è stato detto che le giornate iniziavano alle 6 per finire alla stessa ora, ho temuto di non riuscire a dormire e di annoiarmi dopo cena. Niente timore! Alle 20 già cominciavo a sbadigliare e alle 21 il letto era l’unica cosa che volevo. La sveglia era piacevolmente accompagnata dal primo bagliore del sole e la colazione, tutti insieme alle 7, era proprio una carica perfetta per la giornata da affrontare! Nei giorni seguenti ci è stata data l’occasione di sperimentare le tante realtà diverse che compongono questa città. Abbiamo visitato altre scuole in Addis Ababa, così come siamo stati in missioni più lontane nell’area rurale circostante. Devo dire che le Sisters hanno fatto di tutto affinché l’esperienza fosse per noi completa, in modo da poterci arricchire fino all’ultimo giorno. Il rapporto con loro è davvero speciale, giorno dopo giorno ovviamente la confidenza aumenta fino a sentirsi come in famiglia. Dopo poco la scuola era già diventata “casa” e varcare quel cancello era come entrare in una piccola isola verde e felice, lontana dal traffico delle strade polverose, dove si cerca di superare i problemi e di aiutare tutti. Luogo rincuorante dopo le esperienze più dure da digerire. I sorrisi dei nostri bambini, mi permetto di appropriarmene ancora per po’, sono benefici e farebbero stare meglio chiunque. Confrontandosi con quanto è al di fuori della scuola, guardando questi bimbi correre e giocare, un istinto quasi automatico ti spinge a fare di più per loro. A desiderare un futuro migliore affinché possano vivere come dovrebbero e non essere più vittime inconsapevoli, ma semplicemente bambini. Spesso si vorrebbe fare di più, subito, per cambiare quello che si vede nell’istante, mettere mano al portafogli sarebbe per noi la cosa più semplice. Lentamente poi, stando a contatto con quello che quotidianamente fanno le suore, si capisce la potenza dell’aiuto progressivo alle famiglie, alle madri; si accompagnano verso un miglioramento della loro condizione che nasce dai loro sforzi, dal loro stesso desiderio di fare. Qui ho riscoperto qualcosa che fortunatamente nella mia vita era sempre dato per scontato: l’educazione. Che sia puramente scolastica o semplice buon senso e civiltà, è l’elemento essenziale per la crescita di un bambino che sarà un futuro cittadino e genitore. Ecco, la scuola, la disciplina, l’ordine e la cura delle proprie cose e della persona qui possono essere un’arma potente per cambiare la situazione sociale. Tutto questo viene insegnato pazientemente dalle maestre sotto l’occhio attento delle suore. Dopo la fine della scuola arrivava il momento più bello della giornata: far visita alle famiglie dei bambini. Spesso percorrevamo con loro le strade dei villaggi fino a casa, dove le madri senza esitare ci aprivano la porta, invitandoci a entrare, offrendo sempre un posto a sedere (quando c’era) e qualcosa da mangiare. Qualcuna poi s’improvvisava guida e ci portava per i viottoli irregolari alle case degli altri studenti che sorpresi ci correvano in contro chiamandoci. Ovviamente in un batter d’occhio arrivavano anche tutti i loro amici e ci ritrovavamo, come a scuola, avvolte da un nutrito gruppo di bimbi sorridenti che, interrotta la partita di calcio tra una baracca e l’altra, venivano a stringerci la mano. Le mamme o sorelle si sporgevano dai cancelli delle recinzioni in lamiera o uscivano, sostando sulla porta, per poi ritornare a macinare il tef o a tostare il caffè. Le reazioni erano diverse, chi si avvicinava curioso, chi troppo timido per parlare o indaffarato per curarsi di noi, ma in ogni caso le visite ai villaggi erano sempre un evento particolare che gli studenti non mancavano mai di menzionare il giorno successivo a scuola. La mattina arrivavano con la loro divisa, inevitabilmente impolverati, correndo con la cartella ciondolante dalle loro spalle, la merenda in pugno ed un sorriso a mille denti. Già ti salutano da lontano, pronti a venirti a chiamare per giocare. Uscire di buon mattino dopo colazione e ricevere un numero infinito di baci e abbracci dai primi arrivati perché felici di vederti è indescrivibile. Difficile perdere quest’abitudine di essere circondato da chi ti vuole bene solo dopo una settimana e ti da tutto senza chiedere mai nulla in cambio. Molti al mio rientro a casa hanno chiesto di cosa potessero avere bisogno che io fossi in grado di dare. Al quesito la mia risposta è sempre la stessa: nulla di quello che una persona può fare o dare è inutile, un sorriso o un abbraccio acquistano una potenza ineguagliabile per chi non ne riceve quasi. Vogliono anche solo starti accanto mentre cammini in cortile e sedersi vicino nelle ore di pausa per scambiare due parole o tenerti la mano. I più piccolini non parlano inglese, ma è proprio vero che il linguaggio dell’amore è universale. Devo confessare che le ultime due settimane sono state meravigliose. I primi giorni sono sorridenti e solo qualcuno si azzarda a parlare, ma dopo poco si scatenano! Non appena si aprono sono incontenibili e ancora adesso mentre scrivo sorrido ripensandoci. Gli intervalli sono una dose di pazzia ed entusiasmo. In conclusione non posso che essere grata per una simile esperienza e come si dice le occasioni che arrivano un po’ per caso sono sempre le migliori. Senza essere saccenti, credo di poter affermare di avere un pezzetto in più nel mio bagaglio di vita che talvolta mi permette di valutare con più attenzione quanto mi circonda qui ora e di apprezzare cose che erano date per scontate fin dalla nascita. L’unico “difetto” è che la voglia di fare per loro proprio non vuol pace e non potrò mai lasciarli solo là dove li ho incrociati per un mese. Sebbene siano fisicamente molto lontani non lo sono nella mia testa e nel mio cuore.

In questo breve passaggio cercherò di trasmettere almeno in parte un’esperienza assolutamente indescrivibile. Premetto che sono una persona piuttosto riservata, faccio fatica ad esternare i miei sentimenti e non amo parlare di questioni personali che mi toccano in modo profondo. In questo caso voglio provare a fare un’eccezione, perché sono convinta che l’aspetto più significativo di questa esperienza risieda proprio nelle emozioni che ho provato, coltivato, e che ancora mi offuscano la mente distogliendomi dalla frenesia delirante delle persone e della vita a Milano.

Nonostante fossi già stata più volte in varie parti del continente africano, il primo giorno in Etiopia mi è sembrato il mio primo giorno in Africa. Nessuna esperienza in un ufficio, per quanto interessante e formativa, può essere paragonata ad un mese di vita intensa a contatto con le persone, in cui non ci si trova a parlare con la gente dall’altra parte di un tavolo ma seduti a mangiare nella stessa capanna, condividendo cibo, acqua, odori, sorrisi, parole e sensazioni. I rapporti umani che si sono stabiliti mi hanno permesso di immergermi totalmente nella cultura, nel pensiero, nell’essenza del popolo etiope, come non mi era mai successo altrove. Penso che questa sensazione di vicinanza e di appartenenza sia il regalo più grande che questo Paese mi ha lasciato.

Le giornate sempre pienissime si sono susseguite apportando ogni giorno una nuova scoperta e una nuova riflessione.

L’esperienza della scuola è stata senza dubbio gratificante e interessante al di là di ogni aspettativa. Rapportarsi a bambini che vivono dall’altra parte del mondo potrebbe sembrare problematico dal punto di vista dell’insegnamento e delle relazioni, ma non ho paura di sembrare banale dicendo che fin dal primo giorno ci siamo sentite accolte come in famiglia; insegnare e giocare con quei bambini è stato come avere seicentocinquanta fratellini allegri e affettuosi. C’è qualcosa in loro che non saprei definire, qualcosa che al primo sguardo annulla qualsiasi barriera frapposta tra me e loro, e penso che nemmeno una lingua ricca come l’italiano possa contare abbastanza parole per descrivere l’emozione che si prova ogni giorno per i loro piccoli gesti, per i loro occhi che non nascondono le gioie e le delusioni, per i loro sorrisi sinceri come nessun altro al mondo. D’altronde non sarebbe giusto ridurre una sensazione così immensa a qualche parola, per questo motivo consiglio a chiunque stia leggendo di vivere un’esperienza vera per capire di cosa sto parlando. Oltre all’attività scolastica, abbiamo avuto modo di assaporare la vera Etiopia accompagnando i bambini ai loro villaggi, giocando con i loro amici, mangiando nelle loro case, conoscendo le loro famiglie. Per questa opportunità vorrei ringraziare le Sisters, che hanno saputo accompagnarci e farci vivere fino in fondo ogni aspetto di questa esperienza. Visitare i villaggi significa rendersi conto della pochezza materiale con cui vivono le persone, ma non con gli occhi impietositi di un visitatore curioso, bensì con gli occhi di chi entra in casa di un amico e si accorge che vive in un mondo diverso e lontano dal suo, eppure tra amici non ci sono differenze e ci si sente sempre vicini. Senza elettricità, senza acqua corrente, con servizi igienici fatiscenti, queste case non hanno pavimenti, e solo i più fortunati possono vantare pareti solide in fango, mentre altri si accontentano di ripararsi con pezzi di lamiera o con vecchi stracci, eppure ci hanno accolto come in una reggia.

Con un po’ di stupore guardare queste persone nelle loro abitazioni non ha suscitato nemmeno per un attimo il pensiero che con una spesa per noi irrisoria avrebbero potuto vivere in case migliori, o forse solo più simili alle nostre. Il mio primo pensiero è stato che forse loro non hanno bisogno di case come le nostre, non hanno bisogno di assomigliare a noi, e che probabilmente chi gode di buona salute, ha un riparo sicuro e asciutto per dormire, qualcosa da mangiare e un’istruzione per i figli, non vive poi così male, nemmeno in una capanna di fango.

Nonostante i problemi di ogni natura che lacerano la società etiope, è incoraggiante vedere come queste persone combattono con fierezza, a piedi scalzi ma con la stessa dignità di un principe.

A questo punto mi sono convinta fortemente del fatto che la qualità della vita è davvero impagabile, che chi non sta bene con sé stesso non dorme bene nemmeno al Grand Hotel, mentre basta un po’ di ricchezza nell’anima per dormire felicemente per terra.

Quando mi chiedono cosa mi sia rimasto di questo viaggio non so mai come rispondere, ogni attimo vissuto mi è rimasto impresso nel cuore e non basterebbe un giorno intero per raccontarlo. Un mese a Bole è valso più di un anno speso tra gli impegni quotidiani, e posso dire di non averlo considerato un viaggio ma un pezzo della mia vita.

Vorrei concludere con una citazione del fotografo Chester Higgins: “We are not Africans because we are born in Africa, we are Africans because Africa is born in us”.

Io credo che l’Africa sia nata dentro di me i primi di marzo in Etiopia.

Mal d’Africa

Penso che sia davvero difficile raccontare esperienze del genere, mi sembra di non riuscire a trasmettere appieno le sensazioni che ho provato; anche quando le persone mi chiedono di raccontare, non so mai da che parte cominciare, perché tutto quello che ho vissuto per 3 mesi é stato importante. Quando sono ritornata a casa mi sentivo strana, come se fossi in un posto diverso da quello lasciato partendo. Mi sembrava anche strano essere in macchina e non dover schivare mucche, pecore, capre e pure persone.

Ma la cosa più dura è stata realizzare che non avrei più visto tutti i bimbi ogni giorno, non li avrei più sentiti cantare alla mattina e non avrei più ricevuto i mille abbracci e baci giornalieri.

I bambini, come le persone del posto, sono fantastici; nonostante non abbiano praticamente nulla sono sempre felici e pronti a darti tutto. Diverse volte mi è capitato che mi offrissero la loro colazione o il loro pranzo, magari avendo soltanto quello da mangiare per tutto il giorno. Sono bambini che non hanno bisogno di giochi costosi o tecnologici, a loro basta un foglio di carta e una matita per essere felici. Nelle pause passano quasi tutto il tempo a giocare e gli ultimi 10 minuti si mettono a mangiare la colazione o il pranzo. Amano così tanto giocare che lo fanno in ogni momento disponibile, con il sole o con la pioggia.

Insegnare loro computer ed occuparmi della library per 3 mesi è stato bellissimo; i bambini alle lezioni di computer hanno sempre dimostrato molto interesse; ovviamente la maggior parte di loro non ha un computer a casa, quindi la lezione di computer piaceva a tutti e infatti non disturbavano mai. Cercavo di passare più tempo possibile con i bambini, anche a pranzo mangiavo veloce per poter tornare là con loro a giocare; dopo la scuola stavo ancora con tutti loro per un po’ e poi andavo a fare il doposcuola con due bambine con seri problemi sia a livello familiare sia scolastico. Facevamo lezione pure il sabato mattina, quando anche i figli delle ragazze che lavorano a scuola ci raggiungevano e poi, una volta che tutti avevano studiato, gli facevo vedere i cartoni animati. Vorrei ringraziare la fondazione per tutto quello che fa e per rendere migliore la vita di quei bambini e delle loro famiglie. Un particolare ringraziamento va alle suore che mi hanno ospitato per 3 mesi accogliendomi a braccia aperte.

Vorrei concludere dicendo che è stata l’esperienza più bella della mia vita e la rifarei altre 1000 volte, mi ha fatto capire quali sono le cose veramente importanti della vita e che a volte tendiamo a lamentarci per piccolezze.

Vorrei aggiungere che ho finalmente capito cosa si intende per mal d’Africa, perché quando arriva il momento di tornare a casa é inevitabile lasciare lì un pezzo del proprio cuore.

Monsignor Pier Giacomo Grampa, vescovo emerito di Lugano, ha dato la sua adesione al Consiglio della Fondazione Nuovo Fiore in Africa per la lunga esperienza maturata in 43 anni di attività nella scuola e la particolare attenzione e sensibilità dimostrata per i problemi dei paesi in via di sviluppo.

Nata il 1 Aprile 1967 a Sorengo, Svizzera, laureata in Business Administration.
Sposata con Riccardo Braglia, ha due figli: Gabriele e Giacomo.

Attiva dal 2003 nella moda, prima con partecipazioni in negozi e poi con una linea propria di maglieria. Attiva nella WS Fashion SA di Lugano da 10 anni e dal 2015 è direttore generale. Gestisce attualmente tre negozi di moda e arredamento a Lugano.

Suora Salesiana che da 29 anni lavora come missionaria in Etiopia. Per la sua conoscenza del luogo e la sua esperienza nell’ambito educativo è stata invitata a far parte del consiglio della Fondazione Nuovo Fiore in Africa.

Andrea Grassi ha una pluriennale esperienza nel settore bancario, inizialmente in Corporate Finance poi in Wealth Management, sviluppata fra Zurigo, Londra e Milano.
Dal 2011 a Lugano dove ricopre la funzione di responsabile del settore UHNW Ticino in UBS. Per lavoro e passione si è avvicinato alla filantropia e grazie alla Fondazione Nuovo Fiore in Africa ne percepisce i valori e benefici.

Paolo Bottini has broad experience in advising banks, financial institutions and large multinational corporations on tax and legal matters, particularly in establishing international and regional headquarters in Switzerland.
Paolo Bottini is a board member of Interroll Holding AG, a company listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange.
