Gabon, located in Central Africa, is known for its vast rainforests, remarkable biodiversity, and abundant natural resources — particularly oil and minerals.
These assets have contributed to one of the highest per-capita incomes in the region, yet a large share of the population still does not fully benefit from this wealth, living in poverty with limited access to basic services, especially in rural areas.
Dependence on the oil economy, social inequalities and insufficient infrastructure remain major challenges. At the same time, strong ecotourism potential, relative political stability and environmental protection policies offer Gabon meaningful opportunities for sustainable and inclusive growth.
In 2014, initiating a literacy program in Gabon addressed several key social and educational needs. Here are the main reasons:
Although Gabon was considered one of the most stable countries with a relatively high income level in Central Africa, access to education remained uneven. Illiteracy was still a major challenge, especially in rural areas and among women. The project aimed to help close this gap.
Literacy is a crucial tool for enabling women to take an active role in community life, access essential services, understand their rights, and improve their living conditions. In 2014, this type of initiative was still vital for many African communities.
Many literacy programs were developed in response to direct requests from local communities, aware of the importance of education as a driver of better living conditions. In Gabon, these needs were still strongly present in 2014.
In the years leading up to the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the international community was already strongly committed to promoting universal access to basic education, as outlined in the Millennium Development Goals — particularly Goal 2: “Achieve universal primary education.” The project aligned perfectly with this global framework.
