In 2022, we supported the construction of a library in the mountain village of Gubrye, in the Gurage region, southwest of Addis Ababa. This rural center, marked by school dropout and inadequate infrastructure, has an illiteracy rate exceeding 40% among children under 15. In such a fragile context, every educational space can make a difference.
At the suggestion of Sister Rosaria and in continuity with the commitment of the "Maria Nostra Madre" Mission, we built a simple but functional library, capable of accommodating at least 60 students and offering them books, light, and stimuli to grow. The project, conceived during a difficult period marked by the pandemic, inflation, and internal tensions, was completed thanks to the involvement of the local community.
The library is now a safe place for learning and socialization, where young people can prepare for exams, receive study support, and socialize in a protected environment. Students, teachers, families, and over 300 village residents benefit from it.
In an area where less than 25% of schools have libraries, this structure represents a cultural safeguard against school dropout and in favor of inclusive education.
School infrastructures are the core of our interventions in Africa: without safe classrooms, adequate spaces, and modern tools, learning remains a privilege for a few. This is why we build and renovate schools, create laboratories and educational spaces that allow children and young people to grow up in dignified environments. Every new classroom is not just a building, but a seed of hope and future for entire communities.

Gubrye is a town in the Gurage region, southwest of Addis Ababa, surrounded by densely populated rural villages. The area is known for agriculture, particularly the cultivation of enset (false banana), which forms the basis of the local diet. The population is distinguished by its resourcefulness and spirit of cooperation, but economic resources remain limited and poverty is widespread. Schools often lack space, teachers, and materials, which reduces children's educational opportunities. Despite the challenges, Gubrye is a vibrant social context, with strongly united communities capable of facing daily difficulties together.
With the goal of supporting basic education and vocational training, the Foundation invests in infrastructure and initiatives addressing educational challenges such as the empowerment of girls and women.
Each project is developed in collaboration with local communities and aims to promote education, personal growth, and sustainable development.
