In the context of Pugnido, informal education according to the Salesian method offers young people an environment for growth based on listening, accompaniment, and play. The presence of a dedicated room for educational activities is not just a logistical necessity but a fundamental resource: a stable and safe space where relationships can be built, values promoted, and educational continuity guaranteed, even in situations of vulnerability.
School infrastructures are the heart of our interventions in Africa: without safe classrooms, adequate spaces, and modern tools, learning remains a privilege for a few. This is why we build and renovate schools, create laboratories and educational spaces that allow children and young people to grow up in dignified environments. Every new classroom is not just a building, but a seed of hope and future for entire communities.
Pugnido is located in the remote Gambella region, an ethnically varied area and one of the most isolated in the country. It is a territory marked by the presence of large refugee camps housing tens of thousands of people fleeing conflicts in neighboring countries, especially South Sudan. This situation makes the area particularly fragile: schools are few, often improvised and lacking resources, while widespread poverty forces many children to work instead of studying. Local families, who primarily live on subsistence farming and livestock raising, share the same difficulties as the refugees, with very limited access to healthcare services and infrastructure. Despite this, the community shows a strong spirit of resilience and a tradition of solidarity, signs that reveal the potential of a territory that struggles daily to ensure a better future for its young people.
With the goal of supporting basic education and vocational training, the Foundation invests in infrastructure and initiatives addressing educational challenges such as the empowerment of girls and women.
Each project is developed in collaboration with local communities and aims to promote education, personal growth, and sustainable development.
