The Project

Classroom furnishings and fence refurbishment for safe and adequate school facilities

In Hobe, a rural area in the Mareko Zone near Zway, access to early education is still a daily challenge. Local families and the Education Office have long been asking for a safe and welcoming place where young children can start their learning journey from the earliest years.

To respond to this need, the Salesians of Don Bosco in Zway, led by Abba Aristide Marcandalli, have launched a simple yet essential project: completing a kindergarten that will host 180 children in a three-year program. The goal is to ensure quality education from the start, laying stronger foundations for their future schooling.

The project includes equipping two new classrooms and replacing the damaged perimeter fence. Although these interventions may seem modest, they represent far more than construction work: they are a concrete investment in children’s growth and in the future of the community.

In the short term, the aim is to start classes as soon as possible, providing children with a stimulating and safe environment. In the medium term, the school will be able to rely on adequate and protected facilities, ensuring dignity for pupils, teachers and families alike.

This kindergarten will not just be a building — it will be a symbol of hope and future for Hobe.
A place where children can grow, learn and dream.
A small yet powerful step forward for education in one of the most disadvantaged areas of Ethiopia.

In Zway, the Nuovo Fiore in Africa Foundation supports schools and training programs run by the Salesians and the Salesian Sisters, promoting education and skills development for young people. The projects in Dida and Hobe are overseen by the Salesians of the Zway Mission.

Direct beneficiaries: 180 children per year
Indirect beneficiaries: The positive impact will extend to the entire community. Families will receive concrete support in raising their children, and the whole area will benefit from a new generation of better-prepared children with greater opportunities for the future.

Hobe is a rural farming village in Ethiopia, where daily life is strongly tied to agriculture and livestock. Families rely on subsistence activities, but harvests are often uncertain and affected by climate variations, leaving many people in vulnerable economic conditions. Educational infrastructure is scarce: children walk long distances to reach a school, and classrooms are often overcrowded.
Despite these challenges, Hobe is a close-knit community with strong cultural and social bonds that help families face everyday difficulties. Access to a stable educational pathway represents a crucial opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future for the youngest generations.
