From 2017 to 2021, SOS Children's Villages, in collaboration with Nuovo Fiore in Africa, carried out the project "Concrete help for children in single-parent families" in Adwa, Tigray, offering support to 1,800 children and 600 single mothers in conditions of severe vulnerability. In an area where 74% of families are single-parent households, the intervention aimed to break the cycle of poverty through access to education, child protection, and family strengthening.
From 2019, the program expanded to five municipalities, indirectly involving over 33,000 people, with actions against school dropout and child labor. In a country where over 35% of children live in conditions of extreme poverty, the project represented a fundamental safeguard for protection and inclusion.
In 2021, due to the outbreak of conflict in the Tigray region, activities were prematurely interrupted. Residual funds were redirected to the SOS school in Gode, ensuring continuity in the educational commitment.

Adwa is a city in northern Tigray, historically known for the Battle of 1896 which marked Ethiopian independence from colonial invasion. Today it has about 60,000 inhabitants and represents a cultural and symbolic center for the entire country. In recent years, however, the city has been severely affected by the conflict in the Tigray region, which has aggravated already fragile conditions and interrupted essential services. Many families have lost their livelihoods and schools have been damaged or interrupted, leaving thousands of children without continuous access to education. Despite the widespread suffering, the Adwa community maintains strong social ties and a tradition of resilience that suggests the possibility of reconstruction. The city is therefore a place of great historical and cultural value, but also one of the epicenters of the educational and economic crisis that has affected the north of the country.
With the goal of supporting basic education and vocational training, the Foundation invests in infrastructure and initiatives addressing educational challenges such as the empowerment of girls and women.
Each project is developed in collaboration with local communities and aims to promote education, personal growth, and sustainable development.
