In 2018, the NGO Common River, in collaboration with the Swiss Foundation Herrod, expanded the Bekele Blessing center in Aleta Wondo, in the Sidamo region, by building new classrooms for grades 5 to 8 and starting a literacy course for 40 women from the community. The project responded to the need to extend access to primary education in a rural area with scarce resources and limited school services.
The center welcomes 120 students and serves as an educational and community space in a context where more than 40% of adult women can neither read nor write, and where educational opportunities often end with primary school.
The intervention had an impact on approximately 960 indirect beneficiaries, including families and community members, contributing to the strengthening of basic education, female empowerment, and social cohesion in a context of poverty and marginalization.
Partnerships with NGOs allow us to broaden the impact of our interventions and better respond to the needs of local communities. Through these collaborations, projects are born that combine different skills, resources, and visions to build a future and hope.

Aleta Wondo is a town located in the Sidamo region, a mountainous and fertile area known for coffee and tea cultivation. Agriculture is the main economic support, but small producers often live in precarious conditions due to low earnings and dependence on seasonal harvests. Schools in the area suffer from a lack of adequate infrastructure, with overcrowded classrooms and few teaching materials available. Many children, especially in the surrounding rural areas, have to walk several kilometers to attend lessons. Despite these difficulties, the Aleta Wondo community is dynamic and culturally rich, with a strong tradition of resilience that strengthens social bonds.
With the goal of supporting basic education and vocational training, the Foundation invests in infrastructure and initiatives addressing educational challenges such as the empowerment of girls and women.
Each project is developed in collaboration with local communities and aims to promote education, personal growth, and sustainable development.
