Between 2018 and 2020, SOS Children's Villages, in collaboration with Nuovo Fiore in Africa, implemented a three-year family strengthening program in Dire Dawa for 800 vulnerable children and their families. The intervention adopted a holistic approach to combat educational poverty and child labor, including the distribution of school materials, scholarships, pedagogical support, merit awards, and awareness activities.
In a city where over 50% of minors are involved in working activities and the average family income is just 9 CHF per month, the project guaranteed continuous access to primary education and supported 400 families, with an indirect impact on over 1,200 people.
Among the results achieved: higher school attendance, strengthening of school libraries, improvement of family conditions, and greater community awareness of the right to education.
Partnerships with NGOs allow us to broaden the impact of our interventions and better respond to the needs of local communities. Through these collaborations, projects are born that combine different skills, resources, and visions to build a future and hope.

Dire Dawa is the second-largest city in Ethiopia, with over 400,000 inhabitants, located in the east of the country along the old railway line towards Djibouti. It is an important commercial and industrial center, inhabited by a multi-ethnic population that gives the city a lively and multicultural character. However, the suburbs are marked by widespread poverty and a lack of access to essential services. The local education system suffers from severe imbalances: while some schools in the urban center are relatively well-equipped, in the poorer neighborhoods, adequate classrooms are lacking and overcrowding is the norm. Despite these challenges, Dire Dawa remains a strategic location, with great potential for economic and social growth.
With the goal of supporting basic education and vocational training, the Foundation invests in infrastructure and initiatives addressing educational challenges such as the empowerment of girls and women.
Each project is developed in collaboration with local communities and aims to promote education, personal growth, and sustainable development.
